The following publications and reports are selected from the many by the key scholars I have worked with over the last 30+ years in Japan. The list focusses on northeastern Japan, mainly Hokkaido but other regions are covered to some extent, None of my papers are included because they are listed in other sections of this web page. In the 1970s almost no research on palaeoethnobotany was being undertaken in Japan.

When I first met Prof. Yoshizaki (Yoshi) he understood immediately the importance of botany to archaeology and we became close collaborators despite my being a student just beginning graduate school. Through his foresight and support, and the support of so many colleagues such as Yamada Goro of the Hokkaido Historical Museum, the field is actively growing in Japan. Today, a great deal of fascinating work is being produced. In Hokkaido and parts of Tohoku nearly all CRM projects include flotation. DNA analysis is being incorporated in some instances. This list is provided in part to honour the contributions of my late mentor and friend, Yoshi.

I have tried to include as much bibliographic information as I can. I have been adding the Japanese text so the original information is available. I’m still working on this as time permits.  If there’s information missing, it’s because I don’t have it (most of these papers and books are in my personal collection and sometimes the copies/reprints lack the necessary information). I am continuing to get the information when I can. In the mean time, imperfect as this list is, I want to make it available. For further details and other publications dealing with the prehistory of Northern Japan, check http://aterui.i.hosei.ac.jp/oguchi/_cgi/namazu_ezo.cgi. It’s a Japanese language search engine for relevant publications.
